Catalytic converter value: how much is yours worth?

What decides a catalytic converter's value, why it is inside a scrap car's price, and what to check before selling one separately.

A catalytic converter's value comes from the platinum-group metals inside it, so it varies by make, model and metal prices, and no single figure is reliable. With a complete scrap car it is already inside the per-tonne rate. Selling one separately needs an authorised buyer and payment by bank transfer, not cash, so compare real offers before taking it off.

What makes one valuable

Converters use platinum, palladium and rhodium coatings to clean exhaust gas. Recoverable metal content depends on the design, size and condition, and metal prices move, so two cars of the same size can differ a lot in value.

Inside our price, not on top

Our quote is kerb weight times an all-in rate (£164/t) plus £15. It assumes a complete car, so there is no separate cat line, and a missing converter is something to tell us at booking.

Selling one separately

Sell only to an authorised scrap metal dealer, get more than one offer that names the make, model and part number, and make sure payment is by bank transfer. The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 prohibits cash payment for scrap metal.

Theft and security

Converters are a theft target, especially on vans and high-clearance cars. If yours has been stolen, report it, tell your insurer, and tell us when you book because the car is no longer complete.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a catalytic converter worth at a scrapyard?

It depends on the vehicle and metal prices, so we do not quote a fixed figure. With a complete car it is part of the per-tonne rate; sold alone, buyers price by precious-metal content.

Can I scrap a car without a catalytic converter?

Yes, but tell us when you book. The online quote assumes a complete car, so we price a car with a missing converter by phone.

Is it legal to sell a catalytic converter?

Yes, to an authorised dealer. A scrap metal dealer may not pay in cash under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, so payment should be by bank transfer or cheque.
