Can I scrap my car without a V5?

Lost your V5C logbook? What proof a licensed ATF will ask for instead, and how to replace the V5C if you would rather have it first.

Usually yes, but expect the yard to ask for more proof that the car is yours: photo ID, the vehicle's details and any earlier V5C, insurance or MOT paperwork. Because the V5C is normally handed over with the yellow slip kept, a missing one means the yard has to satisfy itself about ownership. Call the yard before booking, and apply to DVLA for a replacement if the yard requires it.

Why the V5C matters

The V5C is DVLA's record of the registered keeper. The standard process is to give it to the ATF and keep the yellow slip. Without it, a yard has less to go on when confirming that the person handing over the car is the keeper, so each yard sets its own requirements.

What to bring instead

Photo ID (driving licence or passport), any old V5C or the yellow slip from a previous sale, insurance documents, MOT certificates, and service records showing your name and the registration. The more that ties you to the car, the easier it is.

Replacing the V5C first

You can apply to DVLA for a replacement V5C. It has a fee and takes some days to arrive. Check GOV.UK for the current fee and timing before deciding whether to wait.

When a yard should refuse

A responsible ATF will not take a vehicle that is on outstanding finance without the lender's agreement, that is reported stolen, or where the person handing it over cannot show they are entitled to. If a buyer skips all questions, treat that as a warning sign.

Still tell DVLA

Whatever the paperwork situation, the keeper must tell DVLA the vehicle has been taken to an ATF, and GOV.UK says you can be fined £1,000 for not doing so. Without a V5C, GOV.UK says to write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD with your name and address, the registration, the make and model, the date, and the name and details of the scrapyard. Ask the yard for the Certificate of Destruction to support it.

Frequently asked questions

Will I still get a Certificate of Destruction?

That is for the yard to confirm once it has checked ownership. Call 07722 935042 before booking and we will tell you what we need for your car.

Do you charge more without a V5C?

Our price is a weight-based calculation from the registration; paperwork does not change the formula. Whether we can accept the car is a separate question, decided when we check ownership.

What if the V5C is in someone else's name?

You need that person's written permission and a copy of their photo ID. We cannot take a car from someone who cannot show they are entitled to hand it over.
