Can you scrap an insurance write-off?

What Category A, B, S and N mean, which must be crushed, which can go back on the road, and how to scrap a written-off car at an ATF.

Yes. Categories A and B must be scrapped: A is crushed whole, while B has the body shell crushed and other parts may be salvaged. Categories S and N can be repaired and driven again, but you can still scrap them. Tell the yard the category when you book, because the paperwork differs from an ordinary scrap.

The four write-off categories

GOV.UK sets out the current insurance write-off categories. The insurer records the category when it declares the car a write-off.

CategoryCan it be repaired? What happens to it
ANoThe entire vehicle has to be crushed. It cannot go back on the road.
BNoThe body shell has to be crushed, but other parts can be salvaged. It cannot go back on the road.
SYes, after structural damageCan be used again if repaired to a roadworthy condition. DVLA records the category.
NYes, after non-structural damageCan be used again if repaired to a roadworthy condition.

Scrapping an A or B

An A or B car has to be scrapped, so it goes to an authorised treatment facility. You still get a Certificate of Destruction and the keeper still tells DVLA. If the insurer has taken ownership it usually arranges this itself, so check who the keeper is before you call a yard.

Scrapping an S or N

You may keep an S or N car after the insurer pays out and choose to scrap it instead of repairing it. Our price is weight-based for the car as it stands (£164 per tonne plus £15), and a car that does not run or roll is priced lower, so tell us its condition when you book.

If you keep and repair an S car

GOV.UK says that if you keep a Category S vehicle you must get a duplicate log book (form V62) and DVLA will record the category on it. That record stays with the car for any future sale.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Category S and Category N?

S means it can be repaired after structural damage; N means it can be repaired after non-structural damage. Both can be driven again once repaired to a roadworthy condition.

Do I still get a Certificate of Destruction for a write-off?

Yes. When the car is scrapped at an ATF you get a Certificate of Destruction, and the keeper (or the insurer) still tells DVLA.

Who scraps the car if the insurer paid out?

If the insurer has taken ownership it normally arranges the scrapping. If you kept the car, you can take it to an ATF yourself.
