How to scrap your car: a step-by-step guide

A walkthrough of scrapping your car legally in the UK, from getting a quote to telling DVLA and receiving your Certificate of Destruction.

To scrap a car in the UK, take it to (or have it collected by) an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), give them the V5C but keep its yellow slip, get a Certificate of Destruction, and tell DVLA you have scrapped it. You can be fined £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA. Use only an ATF: a dealer without a permit cannot issue a Certificate of Destruction.

Step 1: Get a price

Enter your registration and postcode in our quote form. It looks up the car's kerb weight and multiplies it by our per-tonne rate (£164/t, last updated 19 October 2026), then adds £15. Hybrids, electric cars and vehicles whose weight we cannot look up get a manual price instead, so call 07722 935042.

Get more than one offer for the same registration. Yards buy on different rates, so the comparison is the only way to know what is fair.

Step 2: Arrange collection

Collection is free across our catchment (Liverpool, Merseyside, Wirral and Chester) and the price you accept includes it. We agree a collection time with you when you book; if you would rather deliver the car to our Bootle yard, the price is the same.

Step 3: Hand over the V5C, keep the yellow slip

Give the V5C logbook to the ATF but keep the yellow 'sell, transfer or part-exchange' section, as GOV.UK instructs. Before you hand it over, write down the 11-digit reference number on the V5C, because you need it to tell DVLA online.

If you have lost the V5C, see our guide to scrapping a car without a V5.

Step 4: Get paid

We pay by bank transfer. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 a scrap metal dealer may not pay in cash.

The price is the one you accepted for the condition you described. Not running costs £40 less, not rolling £30 less, and locking wheel nuts without the key £20 less; the quote form asks about all three before you confirm.

Step 5: Certificate of Destruction, and tell DVLA

The ATF gives you a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) as proof the vehicle has been destroyed. We aim to issue ours within 7 days of the car reaching our yard.

Then tell DVLA you have taken the vehicle to an ATF. This is the keeper's duty, not the yard's, and GOV.UK says you can be fined £1,000 if you do not. You can do it online with the 11-digit reference number from the V5C, or by post to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD. DVLA then confirms by email, writes to confirm you are no longer the keeper, and refunds any full months of vehicle tax left (by cheque, or by cancelling the Direct Debit).

What happens to the car at the ATF

An ATF must depollute an end-of-life vehicle under the End-of-Life Vehicles Regulations 2003: fluids are drained, the battery and other hazardous parts removed, and reusable parts recovered before the shell is sent for shredding and metal recovery. Our site holds ATF permit JP3129MP.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to scrap a car?

Collection is arranged when you book, and we aim to issue the Certificate of Destruction within 7 days of the car reaching our yard. Telling DVLA is done by you as soon as the car has gone.

Do I need to cancel my car insurance?

Keep the car insured until it has left your possession, then cancel or transfer the policy. If the car is on your drive or the road it needs cover or a SORN. Ask your insurer for any refund due.

Can I scrap a car that is not in my name?

Only with the registered keeper's written permission and their ID. We cannot take a car from someone who cannot show they are entitled to hand it over.

What if my car does not start?

We collect non-runners. Tell us when you book so we plan the collection. The quote drops by £40 if the engine does not run, and by a further £30 if the car will not roll.
