Paperwork
The V5C logbook, photo ID and, if you have it, your MOT and service history. If the V5C is missing see our guide to scrapping without one.
Personal items and plates
Check the glovebox, door pockets, boot, under the seats and any dash camera or sat-nav mount. If the car carries a private registration, arrange with DVLA to take it off before scrapping, or you lose it.
Finance and insurance
A car on finance belongs to the lender until it is settled, so get a settlement figure first. Keep the car insured until it has left your possession, then cancel or transfer the policy and ask for any refund due.
On the day
Be there when the car is collected. Confirm the price for the condition you described, hand over the V5C and keep the yellow slip, and get a receipt.
After collection
Tell DVLA you have taken the vehicle to an ATF (the fine for not doing so is £1,000). You will then get an automatic cheque for any full months of vehicle tax left. Keep the Certificate of Destruction; we aim to issue ours within 7 days of the car reaching our yard.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to SORN the car before scrapping it?
Not if it is going straight to an ATF. What matters is telling DVLA you have taken it to one. If it is staying with you unused, it needs tax and insurance or a SORN.
What if the car is on finance?
You need the lender's permission, normally by settling the agreement. Yards should refuse a car with outstanding finance.
Can I scrap a car that has failed its MOT?
Yes. A failed MOT is a common reason to scrap. Our quote is based on weight and condition, not MOT status.
